Retinal disorders

Discover more about the common diseases that affect the retina and can lead to blindness
A retinal disorder or disease affects this very important tissue in the eye, which, in turn, can affect vision to the point of blindness. Common retinal conditions include floaters, macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal detachment, and retinitis pigmentosa.
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes, caused by high blood sugar levels damaging the back of the eye (retina).
Flashes and floaters are common ophthalmic issues for which patients may initially present to their general practitioner. It may be a sign of benign,
age-related changes of the vitreous or more serious retinal detachment.

Refractive errors

Discover more about these common eye conditions that result in blurred vision
Astigmatism is a type of refractive error in which the eye does not focus light evenly on the retina. This results in distorted or blurred vision at any distance.
Farsightedness (hyperopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry.

Nearsightedness (myopia) is a common vision condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry.

Corneal conditions

Conditions that affect the cornea, the clear outer layer of the eye
A Corneal abrasion is a small scratch on the cornea, the clear window at the front of the eye. They are generally a result of trauma (injury) to the surface of the eye.
Corneal disease is a serious condition that can cause clouding, distortion, scarring and eventually blindness. There are many types of corneal disease. The three major types are keratoconus, Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy and bullous keratopathy.

A corneal ulcer is an eye infection that causes an open sore on the cornea (the clear layer in front of the iris and pupil).

Crossed eyes, or strabismus, is a condition in which both eyes do not look at the same place at the same time. It usually occurs in people who have poor eye muscle control or are very farsighted
As you get older, part of the aging process can lead to the eyelids becoming more prominent. The muscles can weaken and the skin can stretch. This may then leave your eyes with a hooded and puffy appearance.
