What is premium cataract surgery and how is it different from standard cataract surgery?

Premium cataract surgery is a painless outpatient surgery performed to remove the clouded lens inside of the eye, as we do for basic cataract surgery. But simultaneously, we take the opportunity to address refractive errors to minimize or remove the need for glasses or contacts after the surgery.

Premium cataract surgery involves correcting corneal astigmatism with laser incisions or special lens implants. There is also the option of having a premium multifocal lens implant in the eye, allowing patients to see far, intermediate, and near objects without glasses.

Most of the time, a laser is used in premium cataract surgery to correct astigmatism or help perform some of the surgery steps. With standard cataract surgery, we remove the cataract and replace it with a monofocal intraocular lens. This lens does not correct astigmatism or provide the ability to have a full range of vision without glasses, as we can do with premium cataract surgery.
