DISCOVER MORE ABOUT THIS CONDITION AND HOW TO TREAT IT

Strabismus is a condition sometimes known as “crossed-eyes” in which the eyes are misaligned with each other. One or both eyes may be turned inward, outward, down or up.

Strabismus is much more prevalent in children, especially those under the age of 6.

Strabismus can also occur in adults but often is the result of an underlying medical condition.

In young children with strabismus, to prevent double vision, the brain may ignore the image from one eye. If left untreated, the ignored eye may develop amblyopia, also called lazy eye, which causes visual impairment in one eye.

Typically by the age of 8, amblyopia becomes permanent, and the eye can never regain the ability to see perfectly. It is important to have your child see an ophthalmologist right away if you notice one or both eyes turning.

We can diagnose strabismus during a pediatric eye exam by checking ocular alignment using various fixation tests to look for and measure any misalignments.
If a child has amblyopia from strabismus, we patch the better-seeing eye until the poorer seeing eye regains visual acuity. We can also perform surgery to realign the eyes. For some children with certain forms of strabismus, special glasses can be worn, which stop their eyes from turning inward.

My child is refusing to wear a patch, are there any alternatives?

Patching is the best method to regain vision in the poorer seeing eye quickly. If patching is difficult, we may prescribe a dilating drop for the better-seeing eye so that the poorer seeing eye is used.

I am a first time patient at your practice. Everyone was so nice and knowledgeable. Overall it was a great experience. I did not realize how bad my vision was. I am amazed! The get well flowers were a nice touch!

J.B.

The staff and doctor were very accommodating. Always on time, if not earlier with appointments. The surgical staff was very attentive to any needs such as extra blankets if needed, and making sure you were comfortable while you waited for your surgery.

Pam C

First time in 78 years I can see well without prescription lenses! I was apprehensive to have any elective surgery during the pandemic with my age and health history. The staff sensed it and made an effort to deal with it very professionally.

W.H.R.

Wonderful practice with kind and supportive employees. The doctors are top notch and excellent!

A. Hendrix

I am so glad the doctor suggested LRI with my cataract surgery. I had never heard of it but it is amazing how my astigmatism is dissipating slowly and it is the reason I started wearing glasses 30 years ago! Even working around pandemic guidelines everyone is polite and cooperates as a team.

A.A.N.

I am so happy at how good I can see now. Everyone was very professional and efficient. I feel my Dr is one of the best. I wouldn’t go to anyone else. Every one there was just great. Thank you so much.
