Improve your vision and appearance

Discover why eyelid treatment is the most popular cosmetic procedure for both men and women

Aging, the environment and your health can all affect the appearance of your eyelids and skin. Droopy eyelids and wrinkles can add years to your face and may even block your vision.

Through modern techniques and advances in an eyelid rejuvenation procedure called blepharoplasty, we can help restore a more youthful, alert and healthy look to your droopy eyes.

Sometimes referred to as a “mini facelift,” blepharoplasty has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for both men and women because of its high level of patient satisfaction. We can perform blepharoplasty on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Your surgeon will discuss if this surgery is right for you at your consultation.

Eyelid surgery works by removing excess skin from the upper or lower eyelids, improving both your vision and appearance.

Advantages

  • Blepharoplasty reduces puffiness around the eyes, removes all fine lines around the outer edges of the eye and also helps in reducing eye bags around the lower eyelid. Around the upper eyelid, it eliminates hooded skin.
  • It makes your eyes look younger, which improves the overall appearance of the face making it appear healthier and refreshed.
  • Eyelid surgery is effective in curing specific vision problems. It improves peripheral vision by removing any fat that blocks the eye. By altering the drooping eyelids, it expands the line of sight.
  • Any scars caused by the surgery are unnoticeable since they get hidden in the eyelid creases.
  • It can provide comfort to the forehead by easing tension in brow muscles to lift the eyes.
  • The effects of blepharoplasty last for a lifetime.

Disadvantages

There are a few complications that may arise following eyelid surgery. However, they are all temporary and can be managed without the assistance of a doctor.

  • Difficulty in closing the eye when sleeping
  • The incision can feel itchy or dry
  • Blurred vision
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Scarring
  • Changes in sensation
  • Drooping
  • Bleeding

Eyelid surgery can very rarely result in:

  • Temporary blurred or double vision
  • Your eyes looking slightly uneven (asymmetrical)
  • A pool of blood collecting under the skin (haematoma) – this usually disappears on its own after a few weeks
  • Noticeable scarring
An evaluation by the oculoplastic surgeon may find that a lower blepharoplasty is unnecessary. If this is the case, we can use synthetic hyaluronate fillers in the lower eyelids and tear troughs (TearFill) to improve the appearance of your eyes.
During blepharoplasty surgery, the oculoplastic surgeon will assess how much skin, muscle, and/or fat they need to remove. They will base this decision on a few factors, including facial muscle structure, bone structure, and the symmetry of the eyebrows.

Patients who suffer from dry eyes normally require less tissue to be removed to avoid the exposure of more of the eye to the air, as this can ultimately cause symptoms to worsen.

During the blepharoplasty surgery, tiny incisions are made in the natural folds of the eyelid, in the crease of the upper eyelid and just beneath the lashes or behind the lower eyelid (if lower lid blepharoplasty is also required). This way, the incisions are totally unnoticeable after the healing period.

Many people express satisfaction with the results of blepharoplasty, such as a more rested and youthful appearance and more self-confidence.

As a rookie having my first visit at Memorial Eye in May 2020, I asked for a doctor that was patient and that is exactly what I got in Dr. Kowalski. He took his time and explained my options to me. My testing was extensive and thorough. The staff was very kind and made me feel relaxed during the surgery. A 5 star rating from beginning to end. Well done!

A. Hendrix

I was somewhat jittery about returning to the office after the COVID restrictions were lifted. My concerns were put to rest from the moment I stepped through the door and was greeted by an associate who took my temperature, asked pertinent questions, and offered hand sanitizer, as well as being very friendly. The check in and co-pay payment went equally as smoothly.

C.J.S.

Surgery was quick and easy. Staff was very pleasant. Would recommend Dr. Chotiner very highly.
