Astigmatism means that the shape of the cornea, the part of the eye that we see through, is not a perfect sphere. For example, if you took a cross-section through a basketball, any cross-section will have the same curve. However, if you took a cross-section through a football, one curve would be different from the other depending on how you took it. That’s basically is what astigmatism is. The cornea does not have a perfect spherical shape.
