Astigmatism incidence / prevalence

Astigmatism

Astigmatism, unlike normal vision, occurs when the cornea is shaped like a football (more curved in one direction than the other) and often occurs in combination with myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness). This causes light to focus on more than one point on the retina, resulting in blurry and distorted vision.

Astigmatism symptoms may include;

Blurry, distorted vision at all distances

Causes of astigmatism

  • Heredity
  • Corneal diseases or trauma
  • Keratoconus

Diagnosing astigmatism

Your eye doctor can conduct a refractive evaluation to determine whether your eyes focus light rays exactly on the retina at distance and near. A visual acuity test will determine your ability to see sharply and clearly at all distances. Your eye doctor will also check your eye coordination and muscle control, as well as your eyes’ ability to change focus. All of these are important factors in how your eyes see.

Astigmatism Treatment

Glasses and contact lenses are used by many for the treatment of astigmatism to improve vision. However, there are a number of vision correction procedures that can surgically reduce or eliminate astigmatism by reshaping the cornea, so you no longer need to depend on your eyeglasses or contact lenses to see.

Other types of refractive errors and eye disease include; nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia.

Can astigmatism be corrected?

Yes. With either refractive cataract surgery or a LASIK procedure, astigmatism can be correct.

Is astigmatism correction permanent?

Yes, however, over time, normal aging in the eye can result in mild changes.

I had my surgery done for a cataract and to correct my astigmatism. I can see better out of the eye that Dr Chotiner performed surgery on without the need for a corrective lens than I can see out of the other eye with my glasses on. The surgery was delayed because of the whole Covid virus closings, but when it was performed it went incredibly well and I could not be happier with the results.
